About Us

The Knitting Viking is a family enterprise which started as a hobby a few years ago when Alexander was persuaded to start knitting by his wife, Helene. He has a stressful career with tight deadlines and at the time was struggling to switch off at home. Helene had read an article explaining that knitting could improve mental health and hoped it would help. Alexander asked his Mum, Jane, to teach him to knit which reignited her interest and they began knitting together. A hotline to Jane's sister, Gill (the Ninja Knitter) helped them decipher knitting instructions.

It wasn't long before Jane and Alex started to design knitting patterns. Alex's first project was some handlebar mittens for his cycle commute through London which was soon shared amongst fellow cyclists who spotted them on his route. Jane is always creating with mixed media and soon discovered Fair Isle which combined her love of colours and design. They all went to Yarndale where Jane was inspired by the hand dyed yarns there. She bought herself a beginners dye kit, watched YouTube videos for tuition and began to experiment, dyeing for her family, including sixty skeins for Gill's 60th birthday.

In August 2024 Jane was made redundant from her much loved job and struggled to find something that gave her the flexibility she needed to fit in with her family life and her other hobby, showing her dogs. She decided to launch their new venture, The Knitting Viking, with Alex as the inspiration for their logo, sketched by Jane and digitised by daughter, Georgina.

We are crossing our fingers for 2025 having secured stalls at several wool shows, booked some pop up shops and received some guest dyer invitations.
